Chambersburg roundup: Swimmers earn sweep over CD

GIRLS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 96, Central Dauphin 74: The Trojans picked up wins in all but 2 events Tuesday afternoon and scored a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Rams at Chambersburg YMCA.

Maddie Shifler

“The girls are getting their legs and it’s starting to show,” Chambersburg coach Hali Cormany said. “Many of the girls scored points and built some confidence.”

A pair of Trojans won two individual events each — Margot Ritchie took the 200 free in 2:22.10 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.40, while Maddie Shifler was victorious in the 50 (29.52) and 400 (4:59.54) freestyle races.

Also taking wins were Layne Rydbom in the 200 IM (2:38.17), Hailey Fegan in the 100 free (1:06.89) and Abby Caltrider in the 100 backstroke (1:14.29).

The team of Caltrider, Ritchie, Rydbom and Shifler won the 200 medley relay in 2:13.04, while Lilly Evans, Chace Johnson, Caltrider and Rydbom were first in the 400 free relay for Chambersburg (1-1, 1-1 MPC).

Cormany said, “We were able to win a lot of races and even go 1-2 in the 200 free, 400 free and 100 breast, which pushed us toward the win.”

BOYS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 92, Central Dauphin 78: the Trojans failed to win only one event — the 200 freestyle relay — and collected a Mid Penn Commonwealth home win over the Rams on Tuesday afternoon.

Jed Ritchie

Derek Estep and Jed Ritchie each won a pair of individual events to lead the way for Chambersburg (2-0, 2-0 MPC).

“Central Dauphin is a deep, talented and experienced team, but we matched up well with them,” Trojan coach Chad White said. “I knew we needed to race well to get the win. The boys came out strong and got their hands on the wall first in many close races that swayed the meet in our favor.”

Ritchie won the 200 free in 2:01.86 and the 400 free in 4:21.79. Derek Estep took the 200 IM (2:18.62) and 100 free (53.89). They were also both on the winning 200 free and 400 free relays.

Individual winners included Alex Kaczmark (50 free, 25.75), Brandon Estep (100 backstroke, 1:06.35) and Joseph Decker (100 breaststroke, 1:12.69).

Also on the 200 free team were Brandon Estep and Kaczmark (1:42.39), while Colby Evans and Decker joined in the 400 (3:57.57). The Trojans also won the 200 medley relay, with Brandon Estep, Decker, Kaczmark and Evans swimming a 1:57.33.

White said, “This was another great team effort, with the majority of the team contributing toward the point total.”
