NEWARK, Del. — Chambersburg senior 215-pounder Zach Evans brought home a medal from the prestigious Beast of the East Tournament at the University of Delaware, held Saturday and Sunday.
Evans went 3-0 on Saturday, with two pins and an 8-7 decision, to reach the quarterfinals. On Sunday, he fell 5-0 to Max Varadia of Brecksville, Ohio, and dropped into the consolation round.
He defeated Tyler August of Delaware Military Academy 5-2 to guarantee a medal. But he then lost two close bouts, 5-0 in sudden victory to John Vinciguerr of Woodstown, N.J. and 1-0 in the match for seventh place to Mark Effendion of Faith Christian Academy.
A second period escape by Effendion with 1:37 left was the only scoring.
Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said, “I was pleased with how Zach competed. I’m sure he’d say otherwise. He’ll be back to work this week.”
Of the 12 Chambersburg who competed, 10 won at least one match and the Trojans finished tied for 29th among a field of 127 teams.
“We had a bunch of great matches against some of the best teams in the country,” Mentzer said. “We’re always looking to challenge our guys and show some of our younger athletes a different level of competition.”
Luke Mentzer was 3-2 at 127, and three wrestlers each finished 2-2 — Ben Hoover (106), Rylan Carter (120) and Avery Kuhns (285).
The Trojans welcome in Cumberland Valley for a big Mid Penn Commonwealth match on Thursday at 7 p.m., and then host the My HOUSE Trojans Wars Tournament on Dec. 29-30.
