Chambersburg roundup: Trojan boys, wrestlers have good days

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 55, Warwick 42: The Trojans were able to overcome a raft of turnovers to capture a victory over the Warriors during the final game of the Franklin County vs. Everybody Tip-Off Tournament at CASHS Field House on Saturday night.

Jai’tavius Kelly

Chambersburg (2-1) built the lead to 35-27 after three periods, then a layup by Jacob Bassham, a jumper by J.J. Kelly and a Bassham fast break put it ahead by 12 points.

Warwick (1-2) used a press and a run of turnovers to cut the lead to seven. But two buckets by Kelly and a layup and two foul shots by Bassham bumped the lead to 53-37 to seal the win.

Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said, “I feel really good about tonight’s win. We competed against a really well-coached team that knows how to win, coming off an appearance in last year’s district 6A final.

“Things didn’t always go as planned, but our guys hung in, were relentless themselves and found a way.”

Kelly piled up 24 points to lead Chambersburg, and Bassham scored all 12 of his points in the latter half.

Kelly was named the event’s Most Valuable Player, and Bassham and Sedrick Vessah from Chambersburg were named to the all-event team. Also on that team were Waynesboro’s Jaylon Bean and Ryan Shaffer and Carter Horst of Warwick.

WRESTLING
Trojans win duals title: Chambersburg ran through the Spring Grove Duals with a 5-0 record on Saturday to capture the championship of the eight-team event.

Luke Mentzer

The Trojans (7-0) picked up wins over Central Dauphin East (57-13), Northern York (48-25), Hempfield (51`-19) and Loyola, Md. (56-15) in pool matches, then in the final, they took down Boiling Springs 40-29.

“Overall, it was a good day,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “Up and down the lineup we had good output. (Jaccob) Stoner and (Ivan) Mixell did well and our experienced kids did what they needed to do.”

Five Trojans were unbeaten for the day — Ben Hoover (106), Zach Sherman (113) and Rylan Carter (120) were each 5-0 and Luke Mentzer (127) and Zach Evans (215) were each 4-0. Ashton Romberger (133), Aiden Hight (189) and Avery Kuhns (285) each went 4-1.

Mentzer had the wildest bout of the day when he pinned Hempfield’s Seamus Mack, a state qualifier,  in 51 seconds.

“It was bonkers,” said Matt Mentzer. “They scored 17 points in 51 seconds. Mack countered a shot and cradled Luke to his back for 2 and 2, then Luke rolled through for 2 and 2, then Mack rolled through and got 2 and 2, and then Luke reversed him to his back and got the pin. That’s as much action as you can see in 51 seconds.”
