COLONIAL PARK — Chambersburg put a lot of pressure on Central Dauphin, particularly late in the second half, for a majority of the first overtime and early in the second overtime.
But the Trojans could not break through for a goal in a District 3 Class 4A boys soccer semifinal game at CD’s home, Landis Field.
And that was their downfall Tuesday night in a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat.
Chambersburg was awarded a free kick deep in the Rams’ territory midway through the second OT period, but CD quickly cleared the ball and went on a counter attack.
Mason Bomgardner carried the ball upfield as the Trojan defenders gave ground, and he took a shot from about 25 yards out that hit the right post and ricocheted into the net past the outstretched arms of Trojan goalkeeper Drew Cover.
The golden goal lifted the No. 1 seed Rams (18-3) into the district championship game on Saturday against Hempfield (14-3-2), the No. 2 seed, at Cumberland Valley’s Eagle View Field at either 3 or 5 p.m. The Black Knights edged Warwick 1-0 in overtime.
Chambersburg will be the District 3 third seed in the PIAA Tournament, which begins next Tuesday, if Central Dauphin wins the title, and would play the District 1 champion in the first round. If Hempfield wins, the Trojans will be the fourth seed in the PIAA bracket and would take on the No. 1 team from District 7.
The Trojans had the better of play for most of the last half of the opening 40 minutes, with a couple of good shots from distance.
In the second half, two dangerous shots went right to CD goalkeeper Carter Fitzgerald. Then, with just over 10 minutes left, Goetz Dickman had a great chance from about 8 yards out, but he lifted the ball over the crossbar.
Two nice crosses inside the final 7 minutes to the far post, by Cohen Redding and Ty Nelson, went for naught when no Trojan forwards could get to them.
Late in the first overtime, Cristian Lopez dribbled past a couple of defenders and hit a wicked shot from about 30 yards out that Fitzgerald had to stretch to bat away. After the ensuing corner kick, a Trojan had a shot go off the near post.
Central Dauphin had a few shots saved by Cover, and one ball that got past him was kicked away off the line by a Trojan defender.
