Gettysburg rallies to top Blue Devils, 42-28

GETTYSBURG — Tavon Cooper and the Greencastle-Antrim offense had a fine game against a very strong Gettysburg defense.

But it wasn’t quite enough because the Warriors made too many big plays on offense, and G-A made a few too many mistakes. The result was a 42-28 Mid Penn Colonial defeat Friday night in Gettysburg.

“The kids put out a lot of effort, and it was a great football game, but we weren’t able to finish it,” Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said. “We got down 14-0 and could have folded, but we showed a lot of resiliency.”

Trailing 14-0 after one quarter, the Blue Devils (4-4, 1-4 MPC) struck for three touchdowns in the second period to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.

Seth Stouffer caught a 22-yard pass from Logan Alvey, Cooper ran 24 yards for a score and Alvey pushed in from the 1. Cooper ended up with a monster night, running 34 times for 224 yards and added 87 yards of receiving.

McCauley said, “Our offensive line did an outstanding job tonight and we were able to find some things that allowed us to move the ball. Tavon was very effective.”

Near the end of the first half, Darren Kline picked off a pass and G-A had a chance to bump its lead. But a fourth-down play came up inches short near the Warrior 20 and it remained 21-14.

“We tried to be aggressive because we got the ball to start the second half,” McCauley said.

In the third quarter, Gettysburg (7-1, 5-0 MPC) tied it up, but then the Blue Devils grabbed their last lead on a hook-and-ladder play. Alvey threw 4 yards to William Young, who lateraled to Cooper, and he took it 57 yards to the end zone and a 28-21 lead.

But the Warriors scored a pair of TDs in the third to go ahead, then made it 42-28. Greencastle nearly got it closer, but a screen pass to Cooper ended with Cooper getting hit from behind near the Gettysburg 3 and the Warriors recovered the resulting fumble in the end zone.

“They had several third-and-long plays where we had good coverage, but their guys just made good plays,” McCauley said. “We were one score down in the fourth period, so it was a tight game.”
