G-A roundup: Field hockey, volleyball pick up wins

Ainsley Swindell

FIELD HOCKEY
Greencastle-Antrim 2, CD East 0: The Blue Devils scored once in each of the first two quarters and came away with a rain-shortened Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Panthers in Harisburg on Thursday afternoon.

G-A coach Lorraine Hohl said, “With the anticipation of severe weather, we knew we needed to start the game strong and to capitalize quickly. One half game played can be counted as a full game and the rain started with just one minute before halftime.”

The game did not resume after halftime.

Greencastle (8-9, 6-6 MPC) got a goal from Alishya Thurmond in the first period, assisted by Ainsley Swindell, and then Swindell found the cage after a pass from Ellie Divelbiss. Goalie Jade Erazo made 4 saves.

Hohl said, “We quickly found the back of the goal after connecting strong and accurate passing to each other and continued through to a victory.”

Brianna Woodring

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 3, Northern York 0: The Blue Devils racked up game wins of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23 to slip past the Polar Bears in a Mid Penn Colonial match on Thursday night in Dillsburg.

Greencastle coach Corry Eagler said, “Northern’s serve receive made it difficult to get an ace and their defense was incredibly scrappy. It took a bit for us to make our adjustments offensively, but once we did, the game took care of itself.”

The Blue Devils pushed their record to 14-0 (12-0 MPC), and can claim the division title next week with a win.

Brianna Woodring came up with 16 digs to lead G-A in that category, Madeline Eagler piled up 40 assists and Lily Kauffman ripped 14 kills.

Abigail Eagler posted 18 service points and Kylie Burkholder added 12. Also, Burkholder had 9 kills, Abigail Eagler added 8, Woodring had 9 service points, Kate Furnish had 3 blocks and Abigail Eagler (15), Ryleigh Davis (12) and Burkholder (11) reached double figures in digs.
