Big 1st half propels CV to football win over Trojans

NEW KINGSTOWN — Cumberland Valley outscored Chambersburg 24-0 in the first half and then staved off a Trojan comeback attempt in the second half.

That early lead carried the Eagles to a 38-14 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Thursday night at Chapman Stadium.

“They’re just more physical than we are,” Chambersburg coach Mark Luther said. “Penalties (10 for 63 yards) and lack of execution really hurt, too.”

Quarterback Isaac Sines accounted for al the scoring for CV (5-1, 2-1 MPC) in the first half, on a pair of 1-yard runs, a 28-yard pass to J.D. Hunter, a 33-yard field goal and three extra points.

Chambersburg (2-4, 0-3 MPC) rallied in the third quarter behind Jermere Jones at QB. A long pass from Jones to J.J. Kelly set up a 2-yard scoring run by Antonio Harrison, and on the next possession, the Trojans scored on a 14-yard pass from Jones to Kelly, his fifth TD catch of the year.

Luther said, “We played better in the first part of the second half, although that third quarter went by pretty fast. We were able to get it to 24-14, but then they returned the kickoff and that was that.”

Hunter caught the ensuing kickoff on his own 10 and went 90 yards for a back-breaking touchdown. The Eagles added a final score on a 25-yard run by Josh Wagenheim.

Jones ended up 4-for-10 for 59 yards and Kelly caught three balls for 55 yards. In the first half, Riley Harmon was 6-for-9 for 46 yards, and had a pass intercepted.

“Riley had somebody in his face right away when he tried to pass,” Luther said. “It’s the same thing, over and over. And on defense, guys were not doing what the coaches have told them to do.”

Harrison picked up 40 yards on three carries and Dayre Senft had 14 carries for 58 yards. Curtis Bryant made eight tackles on defense for Chambersburg and Alonzo Torres recovered his third fumble of the season.

The Trojans host Altoona at 7 p.m. next Friday.
