Shippensburg runs record to 3-0 with 21-14 win over Spring Grove

With a 21-14 win on the road the Greyhounds ran their 2022 record to 3-0 and 17th consecutive regular season win.  Shippensburg checked off another box as they Trailed the Rockets early 7-0.

Shippensburg had the games first possession.  Erby Weller returned the kick 30 yards to the Hounds 45.  Diesel Koser ripped off a 26 yard run for a first down at the Rocket 22, but the Hounds lost a fumble on the next play recovered by Chase Sowers.

Spring Grove went on a 12 play 78 yard drive taking five minutes off the clock for the initial score.   Andrew Osmun started with a 24 tackle breaking run.  Cowan Ruhland hit Nizeah Mummert on a crossing pattern for 21 yards to the Shippensburg 23.  The rockets Mummert capped off the drive with a two yard run with Osmun adding the PAT.

Shippensburg stalled on their possession and punted, but the Rockets fumbled and Cody Wenner recovered at the Rocket 30.  Trae Kater ripped of a 12 yard run and added a 19 yard reception from Tucker Chamberlin.  Amari Kerr’s 3 yard run for the score and Noah Henry’s PAT made it 7-7.

After a scoreless second quarter the Rockets had first crack in the second half.  Ruhland with a 15 and eight yard runs, along with a 12 yard penalty against the Hounds set up the Rockets at the Shippensburg 21.  The next play a pass was picked off by Eliajh Bailey at the two to stop the drive.

The Hounds went on an 11 play 98 yard drive to break the tie.  Koser for seven to start the drive and Kater’s 4 yard run on third down kept it alive.  Kater followed by ripping off a 57 yarder to the Rocket 25.  Koser picked up 15 on two carries for another first down and Kater capped it with a 4 yard TD run.   Henry’s PAT made it 14-7 Hounds with 3:20 left in the third.

Spring Grove tied it with a nine play 58 yards drive with Ruhland hitting Mummert for a7 yard TD.  Osmun’s PAT tied the game with :27.9 left in the third.

Shippensburg had an answer with an eight play yard drive to start the fourth.  The drive was capped by a Kerr 10 yard ankle breaking TD run.  Henry added the PAT for a 21-14 lead with 8:48 left.

Spring grove drove to the Hounds 20, but Shippensburg stiffed and got the ball back on downs with just over two minutes to play.  Kater iced the game with a nine yard run for a first down, two kneel downs ended the contest.

Kater lead the Hounds with 153 yards rushing on 14 carries.
