Greencastle-Antrim 9, West Perry 5: The Blue Devils banged out 17 hits and built a solid early lead, then did not allow the Mustangs back in the game and collected a Mid Penn Colonial home win Thursday afternoon.
Makayla Jerin led the hit parade with a 4-for-4 effort that drove in two runs. Sydney Orndorff was 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Caroline Logsdon was 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs.
“We have lost some heartbreakers, but the girls put all three phases of the game together today,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “They know what they need to do to try to make the playoffs, and today was the first step in the right direction.”
Greencastle (5-8, 4-5 MPC) got the game jump-started in the bottom of the first inning with four runs. Orndorff singled, stole second and came home on a hit by Brianna Woodring. A Jerin single scored Woodring, then Abby Stouffer got a base hit, and Jerin ran home on a grounder by Emma Broadwater. Logsdon then singled through second base to make it 4-0.
Winning pitcher Sophie Layton allowed 10 hits, but limited West Perry’s scoring to just one inning, five runs in the third.
Greencastle-Antrim splits with West Perry: The Blue Devils captured a 4-3 victory in nine innings over the Mustangs in a game suspended by darkness earlier in the season, but West Perry won the regularly-scheduled game, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon.
Greencastle (9-2, 7-1 MPC) allowed a run in the top of the eighth inning of Game 1 to West Perry (11-3, 7-3 MPC), but came back with a run in the bottom half to tie it up, 3-3. Aidan Grudzinski singled and Ethan Ford walked, then moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Darren Kline. After a walk to Andrew Kerns loaded the bases, Austin Wyant drew a two-out walk to tie it.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jace Szaflarski walked but got picked off first base. However, Connor Rohm and Grudzinski both hit singles, followed a walk-off base hit to centerfield by Ford.
Ford had 3 hits and 2 RBIs and Grudzinski was 2-for-4. Kerns threw 5.2 innings and allowed 1 hit and 1 walk with 11 strikeouts. Szaflarski tossed the final 3.1 innings and earned the win.
In the second game, Mustang pitchers Aiden Russel and Greyson Shambaugh combined to throw a 2-hitter, with Rohm and Szaflarski getting the only base hits for the Blue Devils.
