Greencastle-Antrim 10, Big Spring 0: Blue Devil pitcher Andrew Kerns was pretty darn close to perfect on Thursday afternoon and the offense wasn’t far behind in a five-inning Mid Penn Colonial home win over the Bulldogs.
Kerns pitched five innings, walked two and allowed only one hit — a bunt single. He fanned 13 batters among his 15 outs.
Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said, “Andrew Kerns was incredible today and Ethan Ford did a tremendous job behind the plate. We did a good job of scoring early and adding on runs. With the way Andrew was pitching, those runs early were huge because he was lights-out.”
The Blue Devils (6-1, 5-0 MPC) managed only 7 hits, but were helped by 4 walks. Aidan Grudzinski and Ford each were 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs batted in.
Shaun Eby, Carter Reid, Connor Rohm, Kerns and Austin Wyant each knocked in a run. G-A scored two runs in the second, one in the third, then cashed in for 7 runs in the fourth.
Big Spring 10, Greencastle-Antrim 9: The Blue Devils nearly pulled off an upset win Thursday in Newville, but the Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and then scored again in the eighth to pull out the Mid Penn Colonial decision.
After Big Spring went ahead 3-0, G-A (3-5, 3-4 MPC), Greencastle scored seven runs in the third inning to take command. Sydney Orndorff doubled and Meadow Gambacurta singled, and both came home later on an error. Abby Stouffer walked, and another run scored on an error. Bailey Leckron scored two runs on a fielder’s choice, and, with two outs, Orndorff belted a triple to bring in two more runs.
Greencastle led 9-5 going into the bottom of the seventh, but Big Spring loaded the bases on a single, a hit by pitch and a walk. One run scored on a grounder and the others scored on a single, a double and a sacrifice fly. A walk and a double won the game in the eighth.
Orndorff and Gambacurta each ripped three hits and had two RBIs and Gambacurta and Emma Broadwater hit doubles. Makayla Jerin and Stouffer each had two hits and two runs knocked in, and Leckron brought in two runs.
