5 area swimmers to compete in states

Five swimmers, representing four area schools, have qualified for the PIAA Swimming Championships, which will be held this week at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

Chambersburg sophomore Derek Estep has the best chance for a medal, according to the seeds.

In the Class 3A boys 200 freestyle event, Estep’s best time is 1:40.69, which is the sixth-best among the 32 qualifying swimmers. The best time in that event is 1:40.00 by Ben Gerhard of Governor Mifflin.

Estep’s time in the 100 butterfly, an event in which he captured a District 3 crown, is 50.20, and that ranks seventh-best. The fastest time is from Patrick Gilhool of Liberty (48.18).

In Class 3A girls, Eve Phillips of Waynesboro, a freshman, is ranked No. 11 in the 100 butterfly with her time of 57.61.

Boys 3A competes Wednesday morning from 7:50-9:30 in the preliminary races, with the finals happening between 4:20 and 6 p.m. Girls 3A’s prelims are Wednesday from 10:25-12:05 and the finals from 6:50-8:30 p.m.

In Class 2A boys, Shippensburg has boys entered in three events.

Jed Ritchie, a sophomore, comes in ranked No. 15 in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:50.22, and also checks in at No. 19th in the 100 butterfly (53.39). Senior teammate Colin Krause is seeded No. 29 with his time of 22.71 in the 50 free.

In 2A girls, James Buchanan senior Madison Price has a time of 2:19.12 in the 200 IM, which puts her 27th.

Class 2A competes on Friday and Saturday. Krause, Ritchie (100 fly) and Price swim on Friday and Ritchie (500 free) swims on Saturday.
