PIAA basketball tourney opens this week for 5 area teams

Five basketball teams from the Franklin-Fulton area have qualified for the PIAA Championship Tournament and will play first-round games Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Chambersburg boys (18-7) will be on the road Wednesday evening. The Trojans, who finished sixth in District 3 Class 6A, will play at Lower Merion (21-3), the District 1 champion, at 6 p.m. The Aces defeated Norristown in the district final on Saturday.

In boys Class 5A, Shippensburg gets to host a first-round game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The District 3 runner-up Greyhounds (20-4) will play the No. 4 team from District 1, Upper Moreland (15-10).

The Greencastle-Antrim girls, who placed fifth in District 3, will have a long road trip for their game Wednesday. The Blue Devils (21-4) will play at Bethlehem Catholic (19-7), the District 11 champion, at 7 p.m.

Two District 5 teams made the field in Class 1A boys. District 5 runner-up Southern Fulton (19-7) will play at District 7 runner-up Union (22-3) on Tuesday in New Castle at 6 p.m. Fannett-Metal, the District 5 third-place team, will play at Linville Hill Christian at Octorara H.S. in Atglen on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Linville (22-3) is the District 3 champion.

Second-round games will be played Friday and Saturday.
