Fannett-Metal(12-10, 11-5 ICC) closed out the regular season with a 70-68 victory over visiting MCConnellsburg. It was a back and forth game from the opening tip. The Spartans led 17- 14 after the first quarter, but the Tigers battled back to take a 34-33 into the half.
In the second half, the Spartans would regain the lead 55-54 heading into the 4th quarter. The game continued to be back and forth through the 4th quarter as both teams left everything they had on the court. With the game tied with under 15 seconds to go, the Tigers Ayden Warren was fouled. He made the front end to give the Tigers a one point lead, but missed the second, however Wyatt Appleby grabbed the rebound and was fouled in the process. He would make one of two to give the Tigers a two point lead that they made stick for the 70-68 victory. “This game certainly had a playoff type atmosphere tonight. It was a dogfight until the end, Fannett-Metal Coach Paul Coffman said.
The Tigers put three players in double figures led by Hunter Hill with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocks. Wyatt Appleby had 21 points and 9 rebounds. Riley Martin had a career night with 13 points and 9 rebounds. “Riley was the unsung hero for us tonight. He played hard the entire way and we needed him to perform like he did,” Coffman said. Ayden Warren had 5 points and 3 steals, while Luke Coffman chipped in 4 points and 7 assists. For the Spartans Kole Truax had 21 points and Wyatt Hershey had 17 points.
Fannett-Metal will enter the District Five Playoffs next Wednesday where they will enter as the 3rd seed and host a first round game against the 6th seed.
