BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 77, Harrisburg 51: The Trojans took a 19-10 lead after one quarter and gradually pulled away from the Cougars to pick up a Saturday afternoon Mid Penn Commonwealth matinee victory at the Kimber Gym.
It was Chambersburg’s 9th win over Harrisburg in their last 10 meetings.
“I was really pleased with how we ran the floor and shared the ball,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We were also able to win the rebound battle, which is big for us, and allowed us to get out and run. When they went zone, we did a great job of attacking it and it and built on our lead.”
Jai’tavius Kelly was a huge factor for Chambersburg (13-2, 8-1 MPC) — he scored a career-high 25 points — 10 more than the freshman’s previous best. He also connected on a pair of threes from the corner, led the team in rebounds and his off-the-ball movement enabled him to get open for passes underneath, especially when the Trojans broke the Cougars’ press or went through their zone defense.
Jacob Bassham scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, including four 3-pointers, to help his team build a 40-27 lead by the half.
Also for Chambersburg, Nevin Yeager and Andon Martin each scored 8 points, Eli Shearer had 7 and Ian Stewart scored 5..
Shreffler said, “We got contributions from a lot of guys, which is really important for our continued growth within a very competitive schedule.”
Jayme Stanely scored 18 for Harrisburg (5-10, 2-7 MPC).

WRESTLING
Chambersburg at Big Spring: The Bulldogs were threatening an upset when they took a 34-30 lead on the Trojans with just two weights to go, but Chambersburg responded with a pair of wins to take the non-league victory Saturday night in Newville.
Aiden Hight (189) notched a pin over Rodney Yeager to give the Trojans (4-3) the lead, and then Zach Evans wrapped it up at 215 by decisioning one of Big Spring’s better wrestlers, Owen Hutchinson, 8-3.
Due to some absences, each team was forced to forfeit several weights, with the Bulldogs (5-8) giving up four forfeits, and getting three from Chambersburg.
The Trojans’ other winner on the mat was Avery Kuhns, who opened the match at 285 with a fall in 4:47.
Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, “Looking back, our biggest match was the first one. Avery’s guy, Jeremiah Lecrone, came in at 19-5, and I’m sure they expected to win that one. But Avery dominated him. He put him on his back three times and he was ahead 8-0 when he took him down and pinned him.”
For Big Spring, Logan Schmidt (138) and Tyler Frye (145) had pins and Clayton Hetrick (172) scored a major decision.
Mentzer said, “We scheduled this match to honor coach (John) Dunsmore. We had some alumni back (Mentzer is a Big Spring graduate) and JD’s son son Mike came up from North Carolina. So for some of us, it was more than a wrestling match.”
