G-A roundup: Blue Devils can’t maintain hot start

Big Spring 71, Greencastle-Antrim 59: Each team had a player have a big night scoring, but the Bulldogs had a bit more supporting cast and defeated the Blue Devils in a Mid Penn Colonial game Tuesday night at Greencastle.

The Blue Devils (2-10, 1-6 MPC) got off to a hot start, scoring 24 points in the first period as Conner Wright poured in 14 of those points. But Big Spring (5-3, 4-2 MPC) outscored G-A 22-9 in the second period, helped by 14 points from Matthew Ward.

Wright ended up with a career-high 26 points, while Ward finished with 27.

Greencastle knocked down 10 3-pointers, including 6 by Wright, but Big Spring had a decided advantage at the foul line, hitting 27 of 38, while the Devils were 7-for-9.

Also for the Blue Devils, Blake Shadoan scored 10 points and Bobby Emberson and Eli Sterling added 8 points each.

Big Spring 43, Greencastle-Antrim 42: A game Tuesday night between two teams with no losses in Mid Penn Colonial play was decided by a foul shot by the Bulldogs’ Lalia Moore with 2 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils had tied the game on a runner in the lane by Mia Libby, but Moore hit 1 of 2 foul shots, and Libby’s half-court attempt fell short.

Greencastle (10-2, 6-1 MPC) had built a 7-point lead (34-27) through three quarters, but Big Spring (10-1, 6-0 MPC) put together a 13-0 run to open the fourth quarter and took the lead, 40-34. The Blue Devils punched right back with 6 straight points, then with 30 seconds left, Libby’s basket made it 42-42. Greencastle got possession again, but a turnover led to the foul on Moore.

Haley Noblit led G-A with 13 points, 4 assists and 4 steals, while Libby totaled 9 points, 5 rebounds and a pair of charges taken.

Also for the Blue Devils, Rylee Henson scored 6 points and had 2 assists, Shaina Overcash had 6 points and 4 boards and Lauren Pool had 5 points and 5 rebounds.

Emilee Sullivan led the Bulldogs with 13 points and Laney Noreika added 12.
