NEWVILLE — Chambersburg competed in the Bulldog Bash swim meet Thursday at Big Spring and both the boys and girls finished in the top five in the team standings.
The Trojan boys earned first place in four events and placed third, while the girls had three top-three finishes and tied for fifth in the team race.
“The boys swam really wonderful today, for a third-place team finish,” Chambersburg boys coach Chad White said. “I’m very pleased with the effort and attitude displayed today by all members of the team.”
The Trojans picked up a first in the opening event, the 200 medley relay, with the team of Brandon Estep, Joseph Decker, Derek Estep and Jacob Shifler swimming to a time of 1:41.95. Derek Estep took wins in the 100 freestyle (48.78) and the 100 backstroke (54.56), while Brandon Estep earned a win in the 500 free (4:57.75).
White said, “Our 200 medley relay continues to look sharp. We have to work on our exchanges, but we should continue to drop time as the season goes on. Brandon swam a really tough and smart race in the 500 free. The race went back and forth for the first 400 yards before he finally closed the deal in the last 100.”
In the 200 free relay, the Esteps, Decker and Shifler took second in 1:33.18.
“Jacob Shifler continues to drop times and swim fast during his senior campaign,” White said. “He had one of the best meets of his life today. His speed seems to be getting faster each meet and he got two best times today by a large margin.”
The Trojan girls had a pair of second-place finishes in relays — the 200 free relay with Maddie Shifler, McKenzie Wicks, Hailey Fegan and Abby Caltrider in 2:48.30, and the 400 free relay with Caltrider, Emma Grove, Shifler and Fegan with a time of 3:59.50.
Chambersburg girls coach Hali Cormany said, “We swam really well today. We have a lot of girls out right now, but things are coming together for us. The two relays today each placed second, with great splits across the board. The 400 relay swam their fastest relay of the season. They fought really hard and made it a great race (Carlisle won at 3:58.09; the Trojans’ time was 3:59.50).
“Many of the girls had their best swims of the season. Our small but mighty team came together and swam hard. I’m really proud of each swim by the girls.”
Shifler also picked up a third in the 100 free in 58.83.
For Shippensburg, Mia Estep had a pair of third-place efforts (200 free, 100 breaststroke) and the Greyhounds’ Jed Ritchie was third in the 200 free.
