Trojan boys beat South Western to up record to 6-1

GETTYSBURG — Chambersburg had a 6-0 scoring blitz at the very end of the second quarter and a 12-0 run in the third to create a healthy lead, then held off a comeback attempt by South Western to win a boys basketball game Monday night, 60-49.

The Trojans, now 6-1, will play Tuesday evening around 8 p.m. in the championship game of the Gettysburg Lions Club Tournament against Waynesboro, which clobbered the host Warriors, 81-44. Gettysburg will play South Western in the consolation game.

“This game really challenged us, both physically and mentally,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said.

With about a minute left in the first half, Eli Shearer picked up his third foul and the Mustangs (3-4) took a 20-19 lead. But before the half ended, Jacob Bassham hit a baseline jump shot, Stanley Lozius corralled an offensive rebound and passed to Jai’tavius Kelly for a layup and Noah Yeager made a steal and layup just before the buzzer sounded for a 25-20 advantage.

“We responded with that 6-0 run to end the half, and then we built on it in the third,” Shreffler said.

After South Western tied the game 25-25, Bassham connected on a short jumper and twice drove the lane for baskets. Shearer then finished a fast break, and later made 1 of 1 free throws. Bassham then stuck in a 3-pointer to complete the 12-0 run and give the Trojans a 37-25 lead.

Leading 39-30 after the third period, Chambersburg opened the fourth with a Kelly layup (from Carter Fogal), threes from Shearer and Bassham and another layup by Kelly, this time from Bassham on a fast break. That lifted the score to 49-30.

But the Mustangs kept chipping away at the lead, using a press to create Trojan turnovers. Plus, Chambersburg missed the front end of two 1-and-1’s. When Shilo Bivins made a steal and layup, South Western had gotten the lead down to 53-44. A 3-pointer by Sam Stefano made it 54-47 with 1:29 remaining.

Then a layup by Kelly and Chambersburg making 4 of its last 6 foul shots sealed the win.

Shreffler said, “We could have closed the game better, but that will definitely give us something to work on and get better.”

Shearer ended up leading the scoring with 24 points, Bassham put in 19 and Kelly added 12. Stefano had 16 off the bench for South Western.
