Trojan wrestlers go 2-1 in quality duals event

SPRING GROVE — Chambersburg opened its wrestling season Saturday at the Spring Grove Duals Tournament and posted a 2-1 record over some quality opposition.

The Trojans fell 39-28 to Hempfield, which is expected to be a contender for the District 3 team title, winning six of the 13 bouts. Chambersburg then eased past Spring Grove, another strong team, 34-30, in the last bout, and also took care of county rival Waynesboro, 45-17.

“We wrestled three very good teams and came out 2-1, so I’m OK with that,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “Hempfield is solid top to bottom — I think they have only hole with an inexperienced kid.”

For the Trojans, six wrestlers came away with 3-0 records for the day — Rylan Carter (120), Luke Mentzer (126), Karl Shindledecker (132-138), Ryder Davenport (160), Aiden Hight (189) and Zach Evans (215). Evans, Davenport and Shindledecker each had two pins.

In the Hempfield match, Luke Mentzer defeated regional placewinner Seamus Mack 9-8, with a second-period takedown giving him an 8-6 lead that he kept.

Coach Mentzer said, “Avery Kuhns wrestled a kid ranked in the top 25 of the state and wrestled him tough for 6 minutes in a 4-0 loss. He showed me a lot.”

Against Spring Grove, a pin at 172 pounds by Garnett Pisle in just 22 seconds gave Chambersburg a lift, and the score was tied 30-30 with one bout left, at 106. In that final bout, freshman Zach Sherman came through with a dominating 15-2 major decision, putting Tanner Grim on his back three times. Luke Mentzer earned another win over a good opponent, with a third-period takedown dispatching Heath Smyser, 5-3.

“Carter and Hight beat good kids against Spring Grove, too,” coach Mentzer said.

In the Waynesboro match, Shindledecker bumped up a weight to take on the Indians’ Bodie Rouzer and it was a good match, with takedowns in the last two periods giving Shindledecker a 6-2 win.

Mentzer said, “That was a good, competitive match that will likely benefit both kids down the road. Bodie had Karl in a couple of tough situations that he managed to get out of.”
