GIRLS SOCCER
Greencastle-Antrim 1, Northern York 0: In a game between a pair of teams that average more than five goals per game, only one goal found its way into the net.
And that goal was scored by Haley Noblit of Greencastle, which edged the Polar Bears 1-0 Thursday night in Dillsburg. The win kept the Blue Devils ranked No. 1 in District 3 Class 3A (Northern was No. 2) and gave them a leg up on the Polar Bears in the quest for the Mid Penn Colonial Division title. The teams meet again Tuesday night in Greencastle.
Noblit corralled the ball after it was hit by teammate Abbie Wolfe, made a turn, then struck it into the corner of the net with about 15 minutes left.
“It wasn’t a pretty goal, but it was a valuable one, after it being 0-0 for a long time,” G-A coach Chris Noblit said. “We held on in the last 15 minutes, because Northern made a really strong push at the end. It was a great game and well-played by both teams. Neither team took many shots — we might have had a few more — but Northern played an incredible game. They are really good on defense.”
It was Blue Devil defense that concerned Noblit before the game — the Polar Bears have three good forwards — and he challenged his defenders.
“I told (center back) Rylee Henson that they have three fast girls up front and we needed her best game,” Noblit said. “And she responded with her best game of the season — she made some tremendous defensive plays. And (goalkeeper) Lexi Nelson made five saves, all of them really good ones.”
Greencastle is now 14-1 (10-0 MPC). The goal was Haley Noblit’s 20th of the season.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 3, Lower Dauphin 2: The non-league match Thursday in Greencastle went down to the wire, with the Blue Devils prevailing 20-18 in game 5 over the Falcons.
Greencastle (8-6) won 25-18, lost 25-21 and 25-18, then won game 4, 25-21, to force the deciding set.
“It was a fantastic match,” Greencastle coach Corry Eagler said. “The girls’ serve receive was constant throughout the match and they swung hard and efficiently against a big block. I was very proud of how relaxed they stayed and for their fearless play.”
