Last week: The Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1 MPC) scored a thorough victory over Susquehanna Twp., 24-7 … They got several big plays on offense by RB Tavon Cooper, who now has 55 rushes for 431 yards and 4 TDs, and 8 catches for 83 yards, and backup QB Andrew Kerns threw for a score … The defense did a good job limiting a big-play offense to one score … Waynesboro was handled 33-14 by Shippensburg to drop its record to 3-2 (1-1 MPC) … G-A coach Devin McCauley said, “I thought it would be closer, but Ship got on them early and rode it out.”
The Blue Devils: QB Taylor Conrad and RB David Niebauer went out against ST with injuries; they are both questionable this week … McCauley said, “Shippensburg runs a similar offense to us. Obviously, there are different kids running them, but we think we have a good game plan.” … He said the standout players last week were offensive lineman John Redos and safety Lorcan Wright, who had 16 tackles … Wright now has 60 tackles … Fellow safety Ethan Shank has 54 tackles and three interceptions … Shank leads the receivers with 7 catches for 217 yards (31-yard avg.) and 3 TDs … Brady Diller has carried 16 times for 64 yards and has caught 5 balls for 41 yards.
The Indians: Waynesboro has a dynamic running back duo of Aidan Mencia (61-437, 4 TDs) and Mikel Holden (68-309, 9 TDs), and QB Louie Lindsay has 33 carries for 212 yards and 2 scores … The team averages 6.4 yards per carry … Holden (8-78, 2 TDs), Mencia (8-85) and Brody Rhodes (7-241, 3 TDs) are the top receivers … McCauley said, “They have two good backs, but we expect a heavy dose of Holden. He runs extremely hard and it’s a big key for us to stop him. They will line up and run belly plays and counters with Holden, and then hit you with a jet sweep to Mencia.” … On defense for the Indians, DB Rhyan Day has 3 interceptions and LB Callin Kauffman has made 55 tackles (10.5 for loss), has 2 sacks and a pick.
Coach’s viewpoint: McCauley said, “I really expect a good football game. It’s a rivalry game, it’ll be very intense. We expect them to give us their best game and that’s what we’ve prepared for. We prepare each week like it’s the biggest game of the year, but I know everybody on both sides will be fired up for this one.”
