Chambersburg roundup: Jeremy Otto qualifies for District 3 golf

Jeremy Otto

BOYS GOLF
Otto qualifies for districts: The Mid Penn Conference held its championship Monday at Royal Manchester Golf Club, with the top 20 players qualifying for the District 3 Championships.

Chambersburg had five players compete and one was able to make the cut to advance. Jeremy Otto fired a 7-over par 79 to place 10th. He scored birdies on a pair of par 3’s, No. 6 and No. 15.

Trojan coach Mark Yost said, “Jeremey played a solid round the majority of the time. He was really consistent.  At Royal Manchester, there is a lot of high grass and it was really windy, so it didn’t take much to get into that grass.”

Also for Chambersburg, Teegan Humelsine shot 89 to miss the cut by a stroke. Jacob Bassham carded a 91 and Dru Bowling shot 98.

The District 3 event is Oct. 8-9 at Honey Run G.C.

Calvin Carlin

BOYS SOCCER
Chambersburg 2, Red Land 0: The Trojans remained hot, winning their fifth straight game, by blanking the Patriots on Monday afternoon in a road Mid Penn Commonwealth game.

“I’m glad our boys were able to see another shutout get written in the book,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “A big shoutout to the back four for shutting out four of the last five teams we’ve played. If we want to be successful in districts, we need to continue that mentality.”

Goertz Dickman scored the first goal for the Trojans (6-2-1, 4-1-1 MPC), assisted by Cohen Redding, and he assisted on the insurance goal, scored by Calvin Carlin. Chambersburg had 16 shots to 12 for Red Land. Drew Cover made 9 saves.

“We knew coming into this game that Red Land is always a tough place to play,” Grove said. “They always play us tough and had a significant size advantage.”

Addyson Hollenshead

FIELD HOCKEY
Cedar Cliff 1, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans played the Colts tough on Monday afternoon and posted their closest result yet this season in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium.

“Today, our freshmen goalie, Addyson Hollenshead, had a great game,” Chambersburg coach Makenzie Magnotta said. “Kenzie Boyd and Amber Pyne played well, too.

“Also, our forwards — Abigail Mowery, Morgan Smith and Lexi Fretz — worked very well together.”

The Trojans are 0-4 (0-4 MPC).

Ashli Ganoe

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, Red Lion 2: The Trojans fell behind Red Lion 2-0, but fought all the way back, taking games of 27-25, 25-23 and 15-4 to wrap up a non-league victory over the Lions at CASHS Field House on Monday night.

“We came out extremely sluggish and made a lot of uncharacteristic errors,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “But we kept fighting and digging and we worked our way out of it. We were forced to adjust our lineup a bit because of an injury to Rae (Raelyn Johnson). It took awhile, but we worked it out.”

Ashli Ganoe put up 23 assists and 16 service points and Kate Etter had 16 assists and 17 points, plus 8 kills. Morgan Stockslager was strong at the net with 4 blocks and 11 kills.

Trinity Rivera was credited with 10 kills and 21 digs, while Emily Marquez led in digs with 30. Addi Kegerreis also had 9 kills for Chambersburg (4-3).

GIRLS SOCCER
Red Land 1, Chambersburg 0: The Patriots did not allow the Trojans to get on the scoreboard and picked up a close Mid Penn Commonwealth win Monday night at Trojan Stadium.

“About all I can say is that Red Land wanted it more,” Chambersburg coach Ed Franchi said, “which is very hard to believe since it was our Senior Night. We came out and played flat. I hope the girls learn from it.”

The Trojans are 4-5 (2-4 MPC).
