G-A roundup: Softball, baseball teams earn wins over Greyhounds

Greencastle-Antrim 13, Shippensburg 3: Trailing 3-1, the Blue Devils erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and handed the Greyhounds a big Mid Penn Colonial defeat on Thursday afternoon in Shippensburg.

Bailee Martin-Irving

“We got embarrassed the first time we played them (a 15-3 loss),” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “I challenged the girls and they stepped up in a big way.”

Coming into the game, Greencastle (9-5, 8-3 MPC) had hit only one home run as a team. Thursday, Adrianna Beeler, Makayla Jerin and Bailee Martin-Irving all went yard.

Jerin was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Martin-Irving had two hits and three runs batted in, and Sydney Orndorff, Beeler and Sydra Royer (triple) all had two hits in G-A’s 15-hit attack.

Martin-Irving earned the pitching win, holding Ship (11-5) to zero earned runs, despite allowing nine hits and a walk. She struck out seven.

Cierra Bender was 3-for-4 for the Lady Hounds.

Caiden Smith

Greencastle-Antrim 2, Shippensburg 1: Logan Layton was nearly untouchable on the mound for the Blue Devils and just enough offense created a narrow victory over the Greyhounds in a Mid Penn Colonial game Thursday at home.

Layton struck out 15 batters and now has racked up 97 strikeouts in 47 innings this season. The only hit he allowed was a chopper that shortstop Connor Rohm gloved and made a running throw that pulled first baseman Darren Kline just off the bag.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Rohm hit a single that tied the game, then Caiden Smith hit a fielder’s choice grounder that scored to go-ahead run.

Greencastle is 12-4 (10-2 MPC); Ship is 8-7.
