G-A roundup: Softball rips rival Maidens; track & field earns sweep

Greencastle-Antrim 12, Waynesboro 2: The Blue Devils defeated the rival Maidens for the second time this season, this time in six innings on Tuesday afternoon at home.

Bailee Martin-Irving pitched a strong game, allowing six hits, walked none and struck out eight.

Greencastle (7-5, 6-3 MPC) scored at least a run in each inning and racked up 14 hits, led by a 3-for-3 effort, with a triple, by Sydra Royer. She also stole five bases.

Also for the Blue Devils, Sydney Orndorff, Martin-Irving and Adrianna Beeler each had two hits and Abby Stouffer drove in three runs and swiped three bases.

BASEBALL
Waynesboro 3, Greencastle-Antrim 2: The Blue Devils tied the game 2-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning, but the Indians answered with one in the bottom half and held on for a Mid Penn Colonial victory on Tuesday afternoon for a season sweep of G-A.

In the sixth for Greencastle (9-4, 7-2 MPC), Brady Diller singled with two outs and Austin Wyand walked. A base hit by Shaun Eby then tied the score.

But Waynesboro (8-3) got a two-out hit by Dominic Moats and he went to third on a single by Aaron King, then scored on a passed ball.

Logan Layton went 5 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and four walks, with nine strikeouts to take the defeat. Cade Reed pitched five innings to earn the win. He gave up three hits and the only run off him was unearned.

Eby had both RBIs for the Blue Devils and Layton was 2-for-4. King was 2-for-2 for the Indians and Bryce Shaffer knocked in two runs.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Greencastle-Antrim 98, Big Spring 51: The Blue Devils picked up first place in 13 events and 10 of them were earned by a crew of five who had two wins each in a Mid Penn Colonial win over the Bulldogs.

For Greencastle (3-1, 3-1 MPC), Kelsey Creager took wins in the shot put (27-9) and discus (88-6) and Karleigh Bubeck took care of the jumps, with wins in the triple jump (34-2.5) and long jump (16-6.5).

On the track, Avery Parks handled the hurdles events, winning the 100 in 16.9 and the 300 in 48.2). Claire Paci finished first in the 400 (1:01.6) and 800 (2:31.7) races, and Claire Coons hit the line first in the 100 (12.96) and 200 (26.5).

Also taking wins were Madison Kirkwood in the javelin (98-3) and a pair of relays, the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Greencastle-Antrim 107, Big Spring 42: The Blue Devils scored wins in all but four events to swamp the Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon in a road Mid Penn Colonial meet.

Greencastle (3-1, 3-1 MPC) spread the wealth around — only two athletes won a pair of events. Luke Montedoro won the hurdles events, the 110 in 15.6 and the 300 in 41.3), and Seth Stouffer sprinted to wins in the 100 (11.5) and the 400 (53.1).

On the track, Dalton Noblit won the 1600 in 4:43.2, Weber Long won the 800 in 2:06.5, David Niebauer took the 200 in 23.4 and G-A won all three relays.

In the field events, Sam Eberhardt threw the shot 43-10.25, Nathan Kirkwood won the triple jump with a leap of 41-0, Levi Bingaman captured the long jump with a 19-7.25 jump and Jackson Wright’s 5-8 jump was enough to take the high jump.
