BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 12, Hershey 0: Logan Layton was a beast on the mound Friday and his teammates backed him up at the plate as the Blue Devils crushed the previously unbeaten Trojans in a five-inning non-league road game.
Layton threw only 68 pitches, allowed just three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 12.
Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said, “The three hits he gave up were on a swinging bunt that he slipped on while fielding and couldn’t make a throw, a slow roller to short their kid beat out, and a ground ball between third and short. That was the only ball that made it to the outfield other than one flyout to right.”
For the Blue Devils (5-1), Caiden Smith was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in, Layton was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Aidan Grudzinski was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Smith roped a two-run double in the top of the first inning to get Greencastle off to a quick start. A double by Layton brought in two of the four runs scored in the inning, with a Smith single and an error scoring the other two.
A six-run outburst in the top of the fifth made it 12-0. Austin Wyand and Grudzinski hit RBI singles, and Darren Kline’s bases-loaded base hit brought in two more.
