Greencastle-Antrim 110, James Buchanan 40: Weber Long continued his fine start to the season and the Blue Devils defeated the Rockets in their first Mid Penn Colonial dual meet Tuesday.
Long topped the field in the 800 with a scorching time of 1:56.90. With that effort he broke the previous school-record of 1:57.76 that held been set in 1977 by the appropriately-named Joe Blazer.
Three other Greencastle athletes won multiple events, including David Neibauer in the 100 (11.26) and 200 (23.76), Luke Montedoro in the 110 (15.82) and 300 (41.53) hurdles, and Nathan Kirkwood in the long jump (20-0.25) and triple jump (42-3).
Dalton Noblit (3200), Ethan Shank (pole vault), Samuel Eberhardt (shot put) and Zane Coy (discus) also took wins for G-A.
For James Buchanan, Grant Ellis popped an impressive high jump of 6-7 for a win, Caden Stoner threw 135-10 to win the javelin and Owen Cooper won the 400 in 54.61.
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Greencastle-Antrim 93, James Buchanan 57: Two Blue Devil runners took care of first place in six events to lead a Mid Penn Colonial win over James Buchanan on Tuesday.
Claire Coons swept the sprints for Greencastle, taking the 100 in 12.63, the 200 in 26.90 and the 400 in 1:01.40). Then Claire Paci stepped in and hit the line first in the 800 (2:24.0), 1600 (5:52.0) and 3200 (12:00.10).
Other Blue Devil winners were Olivia Winslow (high jump), Karleigh Bubeck (long jump), Gio DaSilva (triple jump), Jessica Redos (shot put), Kelsey Creager (discus) and Madison Kirkwood (javelin).
Kaitlyn Yeager won a pair of events for the Rockets, the 100 and 300 hurdles, while Ashley Alfree took first in the pole vault.
Greencastle-Antrim 12, West Perry 2: The Blue Devils broke open the game early with a seven-run salvo in the bottom of the first inning and defeated the Mustangs in 5 innings in a Mid Penn Colonial game Tuesday afternoon.
Sydney Orndorff and Abby Stouffer were each 2-for-2 with two runs batted in — Orndorff doubled and Stouffer tripled. Adrianna Beeler was 2-for-3 and Amanda Grosh also drove in a pair of runs. Makayla Jerin also doubled.
Greencastle (2-1, 2-1 MPC) also drew three walks, had two batters hit by pitch and swiped six bases, led by Orndorff’s three steals.
The recipient of all that offense was the pitcher, Beeler (1-1), who allowed just two hits and no walks and struck out nine in her five-inning stint.
Greencastle-Antrim 4, West Perry 2: A strong pitching performance by two Blue Devil pitchers led to a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Mustangs on Tuesday afternoon.
Greencastle (3-1, 2-1 MPC) got an excellent start from Andrew Kerns, who gave up both runs on three hits and six walks, and struck out nine batters. Carter Reid entered for the sixth and seventh innings and blanked West Perry for a save. He gave up two hits and fanned three.
G-A scored three runs in the top of the first, with Logan Layton hitting a two-run single and Caiden Smith hit a sacrifice fly.
Reid plated an insurance run in the sixth when he hit an RBI single.
