Greencastle-Antrim 12, Big Spring 0: Connor Rohm allowed only 2 hits in 4.2 innings of work, striking out 8 and walking 2, and Andrew Kerns polished off the shutout with a strikeout as the Blue Devils defeated the Bulldogs in a Mid Penn Colonial home game Tuesday.
Greencastle (2-0, 1-0 MPC) struck for all 12 runs in the first three innings, with 2 in the first on a two-run homer by Logan Layton, 7 in the second and 3 in the third.
Layton added a double to his homer and was 2-for-3 with 4 runs batted in. Darren Kline was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Austin Wyand also went 2-for-3. Wyand and Carter Reid slugged triples (Reid’s drove in 2 runs), while Caiden Smith added a double and Aidan Grudzinski posted two runs batted in.
“I thought we swung the bats well today and supported our pitchers well both offensively and defensively,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “We have some areas we need to clean up, but it’s nice to be a work in progress and still be 2-0.”
Big Spring 14, Greencastle-Antrim 4: The Blue Devils opened up with 2 runs in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs came right back with 7 runs in the bottom of the inning and toppled G-A in a Mid Penn Colonial game Tuesday afternoon at Newville.
Big Spring racked up 14 hits, but was heavily aided by 8 Greencastle errors. Pitcher Adrianna Beeler allowed only 6 earned runs.
For the Blue Devils in their season opener, Bailee Martin-Irving went 2-for-2 including a double, and Makayla Jerin had a double that drove in 2 runs. Beeler also singled in a run.
