NEW KINGSTOWN — Shippensburg senior Julia Strine entered Saturday’s District 3 Swimming Championships as the top seed in the Class 3A girls 100 breaststroke.
And Strine came through nicely, leaving Cumberland Valley H.S. with a gold medal around her neck.
The Greyhound ace clocked a fine time of 1:02.61 and hit the wall well ahead of the runner-up, Kamryn Barone of Cumberland Valley (1:04.59).
Strine also placed seventh in the 50 free with a time of 24.05.
Waynesboro’s Lauren Wetzel was also a No. 1 seed, in the 200 IM, but she had to settle for second place. Wetzel swam the race in a time of 2:05.83, trailing only Muhlenberg’s Sydney Gring, who finished in 2:03.41.
Wetzel also competed in the grueling 500 freestyle race and earned a ninth-place finish, posting a time of 5:14.18.
Franklin County had only one entrant in the Class 2A competition at Central York H.S. James Buchanan’s Kortny Green placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.02.
