Trojan boys top Cougars; win streak now at 4

Chambersburg 64, Harrisburg 53: The Trojans are clearly not the same team that opened the season with 12 losses — Saturday evening’s Mid Penn Commonwealth win over Harrisburg at CASHS Field House was their fourth victory in a row — all in five day’s time.

Jacob Bassham

Chambersburg built a lead as big as 15 points, but Harrisburg closed to within 46-45 early in the fourth period. Then Jacob Bassham drilled a 3-pointer and the Trojans hit 5 of their next 6 free throws. The Cougars (5-8) pulled to within 54-50, but Carter Sollenberger scored from underneath, Noah Yeager hit a bucket and Bassham closed it out with four consecutive foul shots.

“We looked really good tonight,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “Jacob played on another level, Jayden (Jones) was really good early and Gus (Mace) is shooting it so well.”

Bassham led with a career-high 21 points, Mace had 16 and Jones followed with 13. It was the first time all year the Trojans (4-12, 3-9 MPC) put three players in double figures.

“It’s been a process to get here,” Shreffler said. “At the beginning most of our guys didn’t know how hard they had to play to compete with who we were playing. Carter helped with that — we could show them how hard he was playing at both ends. I told the guys this was what we needed from an effort standpoint.

“That was the first step, and it’s turned into where we are. The guys know what we have to do to be successful — like how many chances we need to set Gus up, how to play better defense in the post and taking more charges.”

The Trojans have no more games scheduled, but a postponed home game vs. State College could happen this coming week.

Shreffler said, “It’s sad knowing we’re down to our final week. This past week has been a blast, but we wouldn’t be here if we didn’t learn some valuable, but tough, lessons along the way. The guys have stayed connected and fought for one another and I’m really proud of them.”
