Chambersburg roundup: Trojan boys nearly knock off Shippensburg

BOYS BASKETBALL
Shippensburg 54, Chambersburg 53: The Trojans nearly pulled off a huge upset Saturday night against the Greyhounds at CASHS Field House, but Shippensburg held on for the win.

Trailing by one late in the game, the Hounds ran a play that led to a layup by Anthony Smith and a 54-53 lead. Chambersburg had time to get a shot off, but it did not go in.

Ship is 11-2 and ranked No. 2 in Class 5A in the District 3 rankings. The Trojans are 0-12, and until Saturday, the closest they had come to a win was a seven-point spread.

Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said, “I was extremely proud of our team for putting last night’s tough loss in the rear view mirror and focusing on a very good Shippensburg team. The guys played to a high level tonight, were connected to each other and deserved a much better fate on the scoreboard.”

For the Greyhounds, Jayden Statum had a huge first half, scoring 10 points in the first half and 18 of his 22 points in the first half. But as Chambersburg held Statum down, Smith came alive, scoring 18 of his 19 points in the latter half. The duo accounted for 75% of their team’s scoring.

Gus Mace scored 8 points in the first quarter for the Trojans and finished with 15. Jacob Bassham added 10 points and Carter Sollenberger had 7 while battling Ship’s bigs underneath.

Shreffler said, “I’m really proud of this basketball family and how they’re coming together to support and care for one another, especially for Carter tonight. You would be hard-pressed to find the raw emotions from tonight’s contest anywhere else.”

Sollenberger’s cousin, former Trojan player Eric Bender, passed away unexpectedly Friday.

“Carter has been our emotional rock all season long, so it was great to see his teammates rally around him like they did. I’m excited about the growth I’m seeing from this team and they continue to get better and pound the rock.”
