Chambersburg roundup: Wrestlers split 2 duals at State College

WRESTLING
Chambersburg splits 2 MPC matches: State College scored the final 15 points of the match in the last three bouts to claim a 34-24 win over the Trojans, but Chambersburg came back to collect a 40-22 victory over Cedar Cliff in a Mid Penn Commonwealth tri-meet Monday at State College.

Kelby Mixell

The Trojans (10-9, 1-3 MPC) got pins from Kelby Mixell (145) and Karl Shindledecker (120), a forfeit win and decisions from Ryder Davenport (160) and Ethan Faytol (215) and held a 24-19 lead. But the Little Lions (6-4, 3-2 MPC) had a forfeit, a major decision and a technical fall to rally for the win.

The match was highlighted by a battle of two studs at 172 — both Chambersburg’s Tate Nichter and SC’s Lance Urbas are state-ranked. Urbas secured a late takedown to win a wild 11-10 decision over Nichter. It was tied 7-7 after two. Urbas escaped, then Nichter took him down. But he escaped again and got a takedown before Nichter scored last with an escape.

“That’s just a tough trip to wrestle two state-caliber teams,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. “We competed well in spots, and in other places we really need to improve.”

Against the Colts (10-3, 0-3 MPC), Mentzer said Anthony Colangelo’s 6-4 win over Aiden Bachman was a nice win, and he said, “I thought we did a nice job avoiding bonus points at 152 (Gavin Nicholson) and 215 (Ethan Faytol).”

Davenport (160), Nichter (172, in 20 seconds), Zach Evans (285) and Shindledecker (120, in 16 seconds) each scored pins, Rylan Carter earned a major decision and Luke Mentzer escaped with a 3-2 win at 126.

Chambersburg finishes its regular season with home duals against Waynesboro on Wednesday and Mifflin County on Thursday.
