Unbeaten Rams hand Trojan wrestlers 42-17 defeat

Central Dauphin 42, Chambersburg 17: The Rams, ranked No. 1 in the District 3 power rankings, ran off 8 wins in a stretch of 9 bouts to take an insurmountable lead over the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth match Thursday night on the road.

Luke Mentzer

Chambersburg (5-4, 0-2 MPC) opened the match with a bang. Cesar Montelongo scored a 4-3 win at 120, with an escape and penalty point in the third period just enough to hold on. Karl Shindledecker followed with a dominating 14-2 major decision at 126.

At 132, Luke Mentzer took on one of the state’s top-ranked wrestlers in Matt Repos (he placed 4th last year), and Repos piled up an 11-2 lead after two periods. But in the third, Mentzer took Repos down, then put him on his back and stuck him in 4:27. The pin gave Chambersburg a 12-0 lead.

“Repos was trying to finish a takedown and they got into a roly-poly situation,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer, Luke’s father, said. “Luke came out on top and then he slid in a half, and he just wasn’t letting him off his back. He got an opportunity, and he finished it.”

Anthony Colangelo lost his first match of the season at 138, but it was only a 3-0 score to CD’s Josh Miller, also a ranked wrestler. Miller broke a scoreless bout with a takedown in the second and added a third-period escape.

Mentzer said, “Anthony wrestled his butt off against another great kid from CD. Anthony dictated a lot of the action and got into good situations for him, but he couldn’t take advantage of them.”

The only other wins for the Trojans came at 172 (Tate Nichter) and 113 (Rylan Carter), both with decisions.

Mentzer was also happy with freshman Aiden Hight at 189, who fell 5-0 to Timmy Smith.

“Smith is another state qualifier, but Aiden hung in there with him for six minutes,” he said. “He’s a bunch of tough land mines so far, but he’s learning from them.”
