G-A roundup: Blue Devils take 2 from Bubblers

Greencastle-Antrim 49, Boiling Springs 45: A 12-0 run to open the second half gave the Blue Devils the lead for good, but they had to fight off a charge by the Bubblers at the end to secure a Mid Penn Colonial victory at home Tuesday night.

Conner Wright

Greencastle (5-1, 4-1 MPC) led 21-20 at halftime, but, thanks to several Boiling Springs turnovers, it ripped off 12 straight points in the first three minutes of the third period, capped off by a 3-pointer from Adam Root, to make it 33-20. Near the end of the quarter, the Bubblers scored 5 straight, but two consecutive baskets by Riley Gembe made it 37-27 after three.

The Bubblers, led by Drew Vonstein and Trey Martin, kept scoring to keep it close, and whittled it down to a 6-point deficit. But Root hit another three and Conner Wright followed with a layup to restore a 47-36 lead with two minutes left.

The Blue Devils missed the front end of two straight 1-and-1’s to allow Boiling Springs to creep within 48-45, but Root hit the first of two free throws with 5 seconds left to seal it.

G-A coach Rick Lewis said, “The kids are doing a great job and playing well in close games.”

Zach Cole scored 10 of his 12 points to carry Greencastle in the first half, while Root had all 11 of his points in the latter half. Wright chipped in with 8 points and Gembe had 6.

For Boiling Springs, Martin scored 20 points and Vonstein had 13,
