Blazers’ Eckert nets school-record 46 points

Senior Caleb Eckert poured in a school-record 46 points, leading the Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers to an 85-46 victory over New Life Christian Friday in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference boys basketball game.

Eckert racked up quarter totals of 12, 12, 14 and 8 points and wound up with 22 field goals on a variety of inside shots, drives and putbacks. He also drilled a 3-pointer.

“I’m extremely proud of Caleb and not only this game, but the string of games he’s put together,” Blazers coach Austin Sanders said. “It’s always great to have a 6-foot-7 ball-handler on your team who can shoot, pass, finish at the rim and make good decisions. He was dominant in all facets of the game tonight. He has put the work in, and he and the team are benefiting from it.”

The Blazers (3-2, 2-1 MDCC) trailed 4-3 early, but with Eckert and Blaine Minnier (10 first-quarter points) leading the way, they charged to a 29-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. They led 52-26 at the half and then added 21 more points in the third quarter to lead 73-38.

really been pushing this team to step it up defensively,” Sanders said. “The mindset has been to make the opposing team uncomfortable for a full 32 minutes. I felt tonight was our first game where we were able to do that consistently. Hopefully we can build on that and continue to have that mindset throughout the rest of the season.”

Minnier fired in 19 points for the Blazers. Nollin Egolf and Isaac Kauffeldt scored seven points each, Ryan Winters added four and Josh Rowe contributed two.

Eckert grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked four shots. Minnier had seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kauffeldt had six assists and six rebounds, Egolf contributed five assists, and Winters pulled down five rebounds.

On Thursday, the Blazers thumped Heritage Academy, 71-43, avenging their one league loss in December when they were missing two starters.

Eckert led the way with 32 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots. Minnier also contributed a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in addition to three assists.

Kauffeldt and Egolf scored 11 points each, and Rowe added a basket. Kauffeldt also came up with six assists and three steals.

On Tuesday, the Blazers dropped an 84-69 decision at Broadfording.

Eckert and Egolf each scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kauffeldt contributed 11 points, Minnier eight, Rowe six and Winters two. Eckert added six assists.
