G-A roundup: Field hockey, girls soccer capture victories

FIELD HOCKEY
Greencastle 2, Waynesboro 0: Neither team could find the cage in the first three quarters, but the Blue Devils scored twice in the fourth to pick a Mid Penn Colonial win over the Maidens on Saturday.

Greencastle (4-5, 4-3 MPC) received goals by Sydney Orndorff and Abbi Cunningham, while Olivia Winslow and Emma Holter were credited with assists.

The Blue Devils led in shots on goal (7-0) and corners (4-3).

“Up next is a very tough matchup at home (Tuesday) against Boiling Springs, currently ranked No. 4 in District 3 Class 2A,” G-A coach Chris Noblit said. “It will be last home game for us, followed by three straight away games.”

Greencastle is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A in District 3, just ahead of Gettysburg (7-0) and trailing Elco (11-0).

BOYS SOCCER
Shippensburg 2, Greencastle 1: The Greyhounds converted a penalty kick with 8 minutes left in regulation to snap a tie and hand the Blue Devils a Mid Penn Colonial defeat on Saturday.

Travis Bigham made good on the PK opportunity for Ship (4-3-3, 3-3-3 MPC).

G-A (6-2-1, 6-2-1 MPC) got on the board first, in the second half, when Adam Murr scored, assisted by Theo-Gerald Oreste, but the Hounds tied it up.

“Today was a very even matchup — we knew it was going to be a physical and tough matchup,” Greencastle coach Aric Bruner said. “We did a great job of coming out in the second half and making some small tweaks to our game and gave ourselves a chance by going up one about early in the second half.

“I thought we showed some signs of wearing down at the end and not playing our system. The penalty kick call on our goalkeeper with 8 minutes left on a 50/50 ball coming across the goal was a very questionable call in my opinion — almost all of the time you see goalkeepers get the benefit of the doubt. We will regroup and focus on Boiling Springs on Tuesday night.”
