JB football travels to Newport

Game info: The James Buchanan Rockets (0-1) at the Newport Buffaloes (2-0, 1-0 MPC) in a Mid Penn Liberty Division game at 7 p.m. … The game will be at Newport H.S. with no visiting fans allowed.

Media: The game will be live streamed on YouTube on the Newport PA Athletics sports channel.

Last game: JB opened the season 2 weeks ago and lost 20-6 at Big Spring. The Rockets were originally scheduled to play a team from Maryland last Friday, but because Md. is not having football right now due to COVID-19 they had a bye … Newport beat Susquenita 20-6 last Friday.

Notes: In their season opener the Rockets trailed 13-0, but got a 35-yard TD pass from Caden Stoner to Logan Miller to trail by 7. Missed opportunities in the second half subdued JB from rallying any further as it failed to score on a first-and-goal from inside the 10 … Stoner finished the game 5-of-11 for 79 yards and WR Grant Ellis led the team with 4 catches for 63 yards.

Coaches quotes: “Newport runs a lot of run-option plays so we just have to contain,” JB coach Cliff Pine said. “They will run option out of single back, spread and Wing-T. We just have to contain them from getting outside and keep everything in the middle. Offensively for us we feel we can move the ball down the field. We need to continue to play as a unit like we did against Big Spring. Having that extra week off definitely helped us. We had some bumps and bruises that we got healed up. We also got to work on some new things and dig into game film.”
