G-A falls just short against rival Waynesboro

GREENCASTLE — Waynesboro and Greencastle-Antrim butted heads right down to the end of their Mid Penn Colonial football game Friday night at Kaley Field.

But the Indians came out on top when Rhyan Day intercepted a pass in his own end zone with less than a minute left to seal a 14-7 victory.

“We applaud the efforts of our kids, and Waynesboro’s, too,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. “It was a hard-hitting and very physical game, which you’d expect from this game. Unfortunately, we came up a little short at the end and we’ll have to rebound.”

The Indians (2-0) led 6-0 at halftime thanks to a 6-yard scoring run from fullback Mikel Holden. They took advantage of a gift in the third period to make it 14-0. A punt was muffed by the Blue Devils (1-1) and ‘Boro recovered inside the Greencastle 10. Holden ended up scoring from the 9 and Aiden Mencia’s two-point conversion run put Waynesboro up by 14.

Greencastle came right back to get on the board on a 25-yard scoring pass from Zach Cole to Levi Bingaman.

The Blue Devil defense than held Waynesboro twice inside the final few minutes, stopping a fourth-down play and forcing a punt. But the Indians’ defense was up to the task and kept G-A off the board.

McCauley said, “We had too many unforced turnovers, and didn’t take advantage of our scoring opportunities. And we spent the whole first half in our half of the field.”

Greencastle out-gained the Indians, 245-181.
