Powerful Central Dauphin rolls over Trojans, 62-10

COLONIAL PARK — Chambersburg had a very promising start to the 2020 football season.

The Trojans got an interception by Grant Hopple to take possession in Central Dauphin’s territory, and converted on a touchdown pass good for 21 yards from Malaki Blair to Kevin Lee for a 7-0 lead.

But once the Rams — the No. 2-ranked team in the state in Class 6A — got rolling, Chambersburg couldn’t find a way to stop them and CD rolled to a 62-10 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory Friday night at Speed Ebersole Stadium at Landis Field.

“It was a close game for a while, and we did some good things,” Trojan coach Mark Luther said. “But then they hit some big plays and blew it open. They are a very good team.”

Timmy Smith tallied four touchdowns for Central Dauphin, on a 25-yard catch on third-and-19, a 1-yard run and a pair of 38-yard catches, one of which came on fourth-and-8.

The Rams’ offense, directed by Max Mosey (11-for-20, 234 yards), was stopped once by a fumble, once by the interception and twice on downs, although on the first stop, the drive stayed alive after a running into the punter penalty.

Other than that, CD had its way. The Rams ran 37 times for 396 yards and totaled 630 yards.

Luther said, “We had some times where we stopped the run, but Smith killed us in the middle of the field and (Mosey) made some great throws. They really took their shots down the field.”

On CD’s first possession, Mosey hit Tyrell English for 50 yards, but he was stripped of the ball at the Chambersburg 5 by Jayden Jones and Nate Abbott made the recovery.  On its next drive, a tipped Mosey pass was collected by Hopple and he returned it to the Ram 32. From the 21, Lee took a short pass from Blair, turned up field and fought into the corner of the end zone.

But then Central Dauphin hit on two big plays, and the game changed. First, Shamarr Joppy made some slick moves inside and bolted 62 yards to the end zone. Then Malachi Bowman ran a jet sweep around the left end and 80 yards for the go-ahead TD. Then Smith got busy and the Rams were off and away.

Chambersburg’s other score came on a 29-yard field goal to make it 23-10 in the second quarter. It was set up by a 31-yard run by Jones and a 20-yard pass from Blair to tight end James Lilley. Blair finished 13-for-27 for 117 yards.

“I thought we moved the ball well at times in the first half,” Luther said. “But then we lost Lee (3 catches, 61 yards) for the second half (leg injury) and that took away some of our explosiveness.”

The fact that CD had a scrimmage last week and the Trojans didn’t made a difference, although the result wouldn’t have changed.

Luther said, “It’s good to get that adrenaline rush out of the way. You could see it hit us. We had a good start, and then we kind of let down. That’s the first time out there for a lot of them. Our kids needed to have the feel of what’s it like to go against somebody at full speed. It’s out of our system now for next week.”
