COLONIAL PARK — James Buchanan 120-pounder Hayden Shirk placed fifth Saturday at the District 3 Class 2A Championships at CD East H.S. and secured a place in the PIAA Southeast Regional.

He will wrestle this Friday at Bethlehem Freedom H.S.
Shirk was 4-2 over the two-day district tournament. He opened with a pin over Eli Krow of Elco after taking a 7-0 lead. Then he ran into Nathan Smith of Bishop McDevitt, a three-time district champion, and lost by technical fall.
Shirk came back to edge Calvin Sarver of Newport, 7-5, and pin Joshua Sterner of Brandywine Heights in 4:32.
A 6-0 defeat to Dominic Caldwell of Susquenita dropped him into the bout for fifth place, where he came through with a 9-6 victory over Dominic Taylor of Hanover.
Four other Rockets competed in the district tournament. Shaun Reed (285) won his first-round bout by pin in 5:11 over Adrian Sanchez of Wyomissing, but lost two straight bouts.
Nathan Brake (113), Logan Miller (160) and Hunter Smith (182) all went 0-2.
