STAVER NABS 400TH WIN AS GREYHOUNDS TOP INDIANS, 71-56

By Matt Kellam

Waynesboro—Shippensburg head basketball coach Ray Staver scored his 400th career win Tuesday night as the Greyhounds rolled over Waynesboro, 71-56 in Mid Penn Colonial action Tuesday night.

Staver, who has guided the Greyhounds for 28 seasons, said after the game, “I’ve been blessed to coach a lot of good kids, had a lot of good assistant coaches, many of whom were volunteers, and had the support of the district and community.  This team has been a fun group to work with.  It’s not hard to go to practice every day.”

The Indians, (8-5, 5-4 MPC), started strong led by the play of Cole Rhyne and Bryce Shaffer to hold a 14-13 lead at the end of the quarter.

Coach Staver added, “I don’t know if it was the whole 400th winthing, but we started in a bit of a fog.”

Jayden Statum scored seven of Shippensburg’s 13 points in the quarter.

The teams traded baskets to open the second quarter until the Greyhounds grabbed their first lead of the game at 25-23 with 3:30 to go in the half.

They held the lead at 30-29 at halftime.  Collin Taylor scored 11 of his game high 23 in the quarter.

Shippensburg, (12-3, 8-1 MPC), used two-six point runs around a three by Shaffer to start the second half to stretch the lead to eight.

Isaiah Houser made a three to end the third quarter and another to start the fourth and Jeremy Thomas’ three-point play put the Greyhounds up by double digits and effectively put the game away.

“We played exceptionally well in the second half,” added Staver.

All five of Shippensburg’s starters scored in double figures.  In addition to Taylor’s 21, Statum added 16, Anthony Smith scored 13, Thomas 11, and Houser added 10.

For Waynesboro, the offense was all Rhyne and Shaffer, who scored 48 of the teams’ 56 points.

The Greyhounds will host Greencastle-Antrim Friday night while Waynesboro will host Boiling Springs.
