Chambersburg 48, Spring Grove 15: The Trojans got a huge win from Carson Mello in the second bout of the match and used that momentum to roll over the Rockets on Saturday night in the second Route 30 Rumble non-league match.
Mello trailed 3-2 against Spring Grove’s best wrestler, Thomas Dressler, at 170 pounds, but scored a takedown with 10 seconds left and rode Dressler out for a 4-3 win.
Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, “Mello’s match was a huge energy boost to the team and the kids got the momentum in our favor and never took their foot off the gas.”
Thanks to a Luke Nichter pin to open the match and pins at 195 and 220 by Zach Evans and Wyatt Hull, respectively, the Trojans (10-2) bolted to a 21-3 lead.
Nichter’s pin was the 61st of his career, tying him with Drew Peck for the most ever in Trojan history.
Chambersburg’s other wins over quality opponents were a 9-7 win at 106 by Luke Mentzer, with a takedown and nearfall in the first period making the difference, and a pin at 145 by Ryder Davenport in 1:46.
The Trojans also got major decisions from Karl Shindledecker (120), Anthony Colangelo (132) and Kelby Mixell (138).
“It was a great team effort and we did not give up any pins tonight,” Matt Mentzer said. “Evans, (Rylan) Carter, Mixell and Colangelo are improving every match.”
Spring Grove (8-3) and the Trojans are both in the top four in the District 3 Class 3A power rankings.
