McCONNELLSBURG – The McConnellsburg girls basketball team gave it all they had, but couldn’t quite pull out a non-league victory over the Blue Devils, as Greencastle fought for a 39-34 win Saturday night.

McConnellsburg created a 14-10 lead with a minute before halftime, but Greencastle scored a flurry of points in the last minute to go into the intermission with a 17-14 lead.

The teams would go back and forth in the third period, but McConnellsburg opened the fourth period up on a 6-0 run to retake the lead with a little under five minutes left in the game. But Greencastle would create a 10-0 run of their own, highlighted by a pair of Sayge Wilhide three-pointers and two clutch free throws by Lauren Pool en route to their five point victory.

“I knew if I made these, the game would be more than one possession, and it would be over,” Wilhide said.

Despite the win, Greencastle shot a cold 23% from the field, were outrebounded 38-28, and committed 13 turnovers.

“We just weren’t on tonight,” Greencastle’s Ashley Noblit said. “But, we didn’t give up, and we found a way to win.”

Katelyn Traux posted a double-double for McConnellsburg, leading the Spartans with 16 points and 19 rebounds. Sayge Wilhide led Greencastle with 14 points, and teammates Lauren Pool and McKenna Rakaczewski dropped 9 points each.

“Traux was her good old self,” McConnellsburg coach Dot Doyle said. “She does a lot of work inside.”

McConnellsburg (2-5) will travel to Southern Fulton on Jan.9. Greencastle (8-2) will play another District 5 team, Everett, on Jan. 6. It will be the fourth game in five days for G-A.

“We don’t know Everett that well, other than a couple things we’ve seen on video,” Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said, “Hopefully, we can regroup and give it a good effort.”
