DISTRICT 5 CLASS A BOYS SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

McConnellsburg 3 Conemaugh Township 0

WINDBER — Landon Seiders’ hat trick was more than enough for the McConnellsburg boys soccer team to win the 2019 District V Class A Championship, 3-0 over Conemaugh Township on Friday.

This was the Spartans’ first district title since 2001.

With 10 minutes played, Spartan goalkeeper Caleb Strait made a point-blank save on a Conemaugh Township shot to preserve the 0-0 tie. Then, with 33 seconds left in the first half, Seiders found the back of the net to put McConnellsburg up 1-0 going into halftime.

As the second half got underway, the Spartans just missed on several scoring opportunities. Then, with 20 minutes left in the game, Seiders scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway.

Before the Spartan fans could find their seat, Seiders scored his third goal of the game with 19 minutes left with an assist from Xavier Buterbaugh.

The Spartans defense continued to frustrate the Indian offense to preserve the shutout.

McConnellsburg (21-0) will now take its unblemished record into the PIAA State Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to play the third-place team from District 3, Lancaster Country Day (13-5-2), at a site and time to be determined.

Conemaugh Township’s season comes to an end with a record of 13-4-2.
