JB volleyball makes school history

History was made for the James Buchanan Lady Rocket volleyball team Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Rockets won their first-ever postseason match as they beat Manheim Central 3-1 at Garden Spot High School in the first round of the District 3 Class AAA volleyball tournament.

JB (17-4), the No. 6 seed, will now play either No. 3 seed Garden Sport or No. 14 seed Wyomissing on Tuesday at 6 p.m. If Garden Spot wins it will host the quarterfinal match, if Wyomissing wins the Lady Rockets will get to host the match.

“This was a great win,” JB coach Erica Piper said. “Wins like this don’t come easy so we’re going to cherish this one this weekend and then give it our best shot Tuesday.”

The Lady Rockets won the first 2 sets 25-19 and 25-17. Manheim Cental (12–7) forced a fourth set by winning the third set 25-17. In the fourth set JB pulled out a 25-22 victory to wrap up the match.

Rylynn Welsh led the Lady Rockets with 12 kills and 17 points. Campbelle Dayley added 23 digs, 15 points and 7 kills.

“Manheim Central pushed us the whole way and I’m proud of the girls for hanging together and winning our first ever district match.”
