YORK — Four of the seven Franklin County golfers who qualified for the District 3 Golf Championships made the cut Friday and will play in the final round Saturday.
Among the boys, Devin Smith of Waynesboro and Jacob Carlin of Chambersburg moved on in Class 3A, and James Buchanan’s Caleb Reath will play Saturday in 2A.
In girls 3A play, Ella Lowry of Waynesboro will compete on Saturday.
Smith, a sophomore, shot a 2-over par 74 at Briarwood East Golf Club and is tied for third with Lower Dauphin’s Derek McLaughlin. They are chasing the leader, Carson Bacha of Central York, who fired a 4-under 68.
Smith had only one birdie, at No. 2, but shot steady nines of 37-37 to post his 74.
Carlin nearly shot himself out of it with a quadruple bogey 8 on No. 16, but immediately restored order by posting birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to finish with a score of 81. He is tied for 21st and made the cut by four strokes.
In 2A, JB’s Reath shot 8-over par 80, which included a wild back nine. He scored a triple bogey on No. 13, but countered that with four birdies — Nos. 10, 15, 17 and 18. Reath is six shots back of leader Gavin Baer of Lancaster Mennonite.
Lowry put together nines of 38 and 41 to post an 8-over score of 79 in 3A girls at Briarwood West. She is in a three-way tie for seventh and trails the leader, Ammala Moua of Cocalico, by seven strokes.
Also competing in 3A girls Friday were Chambersburg’s Megan Brandt (89) and Heather Sanbower (91), who just missed the cut line of 87.
James Buchanan’s Larry Singer also did not make the cut in 2A boys.
