Trojans pull away from Mustangs in 2nd half, 35-7

HANOVER — It was not, as Chambersburg football coach Mark Luther said, “a clean game.”

However, he’s not going to turn down a 35-7 non-league victory over South Western on Friday night at the Mustang Corral.

The Mustangs did not go easily. When they scored on the first possession of the second half, they trailed only 14-7.

But the Trojans (2-0) then put together a quick seven-play drive, all on the ground, in which the shortest run was 5 yards. Jayden Jones picked up 44 of the yards, including a 17-yard jaunt to the end zone around the left end to raise the score to 21-7 and create some breathing room.

Luther said, “They had been trying to take away our flanks with two guys coming off the edge on the snap. So we put in two tight ends and took it to them. Jayden made some nice runs.”

South Western (0-2) then punted and on a third-and-10 from the Mustang 37, Chambersburg quarterback Brady Stumbaugh hung in there in the face of a blitz and hit tight end Terell Williams in stride for the clinching touchdown to end the third quarter.

It was the second TD catch by Williams. The first came in the first quarter on a 4-yard slant from Stumbaugh.

Williams said, “We knew they like to blitz and when we saw they were coming, we have a signal. I just the filled the spot the linebacker left and the quarterback threw it to me.”

The first half was all Chambersburg … to a degree.

Of the 61 plays snapped by either team, only three of them began in Trojan territory. And the Trojans held a 167-12 yardage advantage.

But Chambersburg scored only twice. A holding penalty wiped out what would have been a 39-yard reverse by Tyeshawn Worrell and a field goal attempt later was missed.

The Trojan defense had three sacks in the first half and what appeared to be a safety when Williams tackled running back Charles Gaither a good three yards into the end zone. But an official ruled that the quarterback (who didn’t have the ball) was down on the 2.

It was bizarre.

“I thought we did a good job getting pressure on them early,” said defensive end Tyrion Hodges, who had a sack along with Wyatt Hull and Williams. “Then they made some adjustments. But we stayed true to what we do.”

The defense limited South Western to 174 yards, including just 51 on 40 carries. The Mustangs had 18 running plays gain either zero yards or get thrown for a loss.

“We made a lot of mistakes on both sides of the ball,” Luther said. “We didn’t play as clean of a game as we did last week. But South Western had a good game plan.”

Stumbaugh had two TD passes to Williams, but connected on only 7 of 17 for 128 yards. Keyshawn Jones run for 83 yards, including a great play on the final score.

He took a pitch to his right, faked a pass, then tucked the ball and ran down the sideline 18 yards into the end zone, hurdling one would-be tackler.

“We thought they’d play aggressive on the handoff,” Luther said. “We just told him he didn’t have to throw it. He made a great decision and then made a great run.”

NOTES: Malaki Blair stopped one South Western drive in the fourth quarter with an interception on his own 7 … Williams had three catches for 48 yards … Carter Sollenberger recovered a fumble for the Trojans … Barry Chamberlain, who was 1-for-9 last week for the Mustangs, hit on 9 of 16 passes for 103 yards … The Trojans travel to play at Red Lion (2-0) next Friday.
