Trojans display weapons in opening win over Greencastle

CHAMBERSBURG — Smiles were easy to come by on the turf of Trojan Stadium after Chambersburg handed Greencastle-Antrim a 56-13 season-opening football defeat Friday night.

Naturally, the Trojans were happy.

Three players — Keyshawn Jones, Jayden Jones and Tyler Luther — scored two touchdowns each, and Tyeshawn Worrell and Malaki Blair also found the end zone.

Chambersburg coach Mark Luther said, “I’m pleased. Obviously, there were a lot of expectations for us, mostly put on by ourselves. But we flew around and played physical and we got the ball to a lot of different people on offense.”

But the Blue Devils had plenty to be happy about, too. Chambersburg scored only once in the first period and G-A ended up with 249 yards of offense. Greencastle showed that it has some quality players.

“I’m really proud of the team’s effort,” Blue Devil coach Devin McCauley said. “I think we showed a lot of positive sides. I’m excited about this team — we have a lot of young fighters.”

Chambersburg got a boost on offense from a kind of secret weapon who was hiding in the Luther house. Tyler Luther was the team’s kicker before this year, but he had played varsity soccer instead of football. This year, he decided to join the football team full-time as a field player.

The result Friday was four catches for 77 yards and TDs of 28 and 29 yards. He also had a 54-yard scoring pass called back for a hold, and a 7-yard TD toss called back for another penalty.

“After last season, I started thinking about playing football, and I debated it all summer,” Tyler Luther said. “I came to the conclusion I wanted to play, and tonight was very exciting and a lot of fun. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they called my number and I had a good night.”

Mark Luther said, “It was his decision. He’s athletic and he can run. We have a bunch of guys who can run, and it makes a difference when you can spread it out and make them play a lot of people.”

Quarterback Brady Stumbaugh had a fine game, hitting 8 of 10 passes for 140 yards and two scores.

“I was reading the defense a little better,” Stumbaugh said, “and it’s nice to have guys at every spot who can make a play.”

Luther said, “Brady was crisp with his decision-making, and he threw the ball well.”

Keyshawn Jones was effective on the ground, with 90 yards on seven carries, including a 56-yard scoring jaunt, and he also jumped an out route for an interception and went 58 yards for a score.

Jayden Jones

Jayden Jones, his backup, carried the ball eight times and gained 100 yards, including a 66-yard scamper for his second touchdown.

McCauley said, “We showed signs of life in the first half against a very good and experienced team. But they eventually made more plays than us.”

One was an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half by Worrell, who also returned one last year in a District 3 playoff loss.

“I just saw a seam, and I know I’m the fastest guy on the field, so I just hit the hole,” Worrell said.

Greencastle got some sparkling play on offense from quarterback Zach Cole, tailback David Niebauer and wide receiver Adam Root.

Cole hit 13 of 21 passes for 143 yards, and was on target most of the night. Niebauer picked up 91 yards on 22 carries, and also returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. Root made four catches for 75 yards, including a 19-yarder for a touchdown.

McCauley said, “Cole played a clean game, except for the interception, and he stood right down the barrel of their rush and made some throws. Niebauer showed signs of what he can do.”

Luther said, “There were a lot of good things on both sides, and nobody got hurt, so it was  good first game. I think Greencastle showed it could be good down the road.”

NOTES: Chambersburg had three kickers make point-after kicks — Tyler Luther had six and Tanner Luther and Teegan Humelsine one each … The Trojans had 449 yards of offense … Blair, the backup QB, ran four times for 51 yards, including an 11-yard score … Chambersburg travels to South Western next Friday night, and G-A is at Camp Hill.
