SHIPPENSBURG — Franklin County athletes got off to a good start on the first day of the District 3 Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg University on Friday afternoon.

Three boys earned Class 3A medals, and four school records were broken — two for Chambersburg and two for Shippensburg.

The top placewinner was Chambersburg’s Brock Harmon, who placed third in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 55-5. His previous best was his qualifying mark of 53-9. Berks Catholic’s Brendan George won with a throw of 57-6.

Two Greyhounds captured eighth-place medals — Kevin Suero in the triple jump (45-2.75) and Nick Gustafson in the shot put (48-11). Suero’s jump was a school-record effort.

In the boys time trials, two records were set.

Chambersburg’s Tyeshawn Worrell ran a 10.83 in the first round of trials, which was the best time of the round. In the semifinals, his time of 10.66 broke his own school record of 10.71 and put him in Saturday’s final. That time was the second-best of the semifinals, behind only Harrisburg’s Kamere Day (10.65).

In the 110 hurdles, Ship’s Michael Reich ran a 14.88 in the first round, which was the best time of the round and broke the school record. He followed that up with a 14.90 in the semifinals (4th-best time) to advance to the final.

The last school record that fell came in the girls 100 hurdles trials. Chambersburg’s Bre’ya Clopper went 15.00 in the semifinals, then bested that with a record 14.86 in the semifinals to advance to the final. She had the second-fastest time of the day.

In the same event, the Trojans’ Sydnie Gilbert reached the semifinals with a 15.72, then ran 15.32 in the semis to earn a spot in the final.

In the girls 200 trials, Shanelle Burrowes of Chambersburg ran 26.23 to reach the semifinals, but despite bettering that time (26.02), she did not make the final.
