Tim Cook Invitational may get nice payback with weather

G 4x100 Chamb. Jacelyn Jones

Chambersburg’s Jacelyn Jones competes in the 4×100 relay last May in the Mid Penn Conference championships. The Trojans have recorded the top time in that event coming into this Saturday’s Tim Cook Invitational.

A year ago, a late March snow storm caused the Tim Cook Invitational to be canceled.

Mother Nature may be trying to make up for that harsh treatment, because when the 2019 Cook track & field meet is held Saturday at Trojan Stadium, possibly the warmest day of the year is expected, with athletes enjoying temperatures around 70 degrees.

Chambersburg boys coach Bob Walker, the meet director, said, “I’ve been getting a lot of emails from coaches, and they’re excited about the weather for Saturday. This is probably the warmest it’s ever been for this meet.”

Competition begins at 10 a.m., with field events and time trials. On the track, the only final before noon is the 4×800 relay. The final event, the 4×400 relay, is slated to start at 3:45, but the events may finish early. Admission is $5.

“We’ll have 29 teams represented, although some are only sending a few athletes,” Walker said. “We’ve become known in south central Pa. as a meet where you can try to post a qualifying performance for the Penn Relays, and that brings in some really good kids.”

Local teams Chambersburg, Shippensburg, Greencastle-Antrim, James Buchanan, Waynesboro and Mercersburg Academy are bringing full teams.

There will be no team score kept.

Walker and Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim typically use the meet to get as many kids on their teams involved as possible. Each team can put two athletes in each event.

“That was one thing Tim Cook always stressed; he wanted to give opportunities to as many kids as possible,” Walker said of the former Trojan girls coach for whom the meet is named.

In the girls events, Chambersburg has the top performance time in the 4×800 and 4×100 relays, while Greencastle-Antrim star Taryn Parks is ranked first in the 800 (2:13.0).

For the boys, the Trojans’ Brock Harmon has the No. 1 spot in the shot put at 52-5, while Ship’s Alex Doyle is tied for the top spot in the high jump at 6-2.

One of the top athletes in the field is Skylar Ciccolini of Mifflin County in the javelin. Her qualifying throw of 173-11 is nearly 40 feet longer than No. 2 Kristen Herr of Lampeter-Strasburg. Ciccolini is also seeded first in the high jump at 5-1.
