Blazers Isaac Kauffeldt (22) and Josiah Ziebarth (25) apply defensive pressure to Calvary’s Colby Mallery.

in Martinsburg, W. Va., against No. 2 seed Heritage, a 61-27 winner over Faith Christian Tuesday.

“I was proud of our guys tonight,” Blazers coach Austin Sanders said. “Calvary really took it to us on Thursday (49-39 defeat at Calvary) and did some things that made us uncomfortable on the basketball court. Our focus tonight was to dictate the pace on the defensive end and push the ball in transition, which I feel we did effectively.”

The Blazers turned in a solid defensive effort and balanced scoring to propel themselves into the semifinals, with sophomores Caleb Eckert, Blaine Minnier and Isaac Kauffeldt scoring in double figures.

Eckert scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for another double-double, and he added four assists and four blocked shots. Minnier scored 13 points, including nine on a trio of three-pointers in the decisive third quarter. Kauffeldt scored a season-high 11 points, including eight of the Blazers’ 10 in the second quarter.

Defense carried the Blazers to a 9-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Calvary, however, battled back to tie the game at halftime, 19-19.

But the Blazers surged to a 23-point third quarter, scoring the first seven points of the period on buckets by Nathan Statler and Eckert and a Minnier 3-pointer. CVCS led 42-28 going into the final period.

Also for the Blazers, Statler scored six points, Triston Horn four and Josiah Ziebarth two. Additionally, Horn grabbed six rebounds as the Blazers enjoyed a 39-22 advantage on the boards. Statler had three assists and three steals, and Kauffeldt handed out three assists.

For Calvary, Colby Mallery scored 16 points and Ashby Whitacre added 13.

“We understand that this was only step one in the playoffs and that we have bigger and better goals to accomplish,” Sanders said. “Our focus now is just staying locked in on the task in front of us, control what we can control and trust that the outcome will be a positive one.”

In other MDCC playoff games, No. 1 Broadfording defeated No. 8 New Life and No. 5 Shalom beat No. 4 Grace 46-42. Broadfording will play Shalom on Friday.
