NEW KINGSTOWN — The Mid Penn Conference held its boys and girls swimming championships on Friday and Saturday at Cumberland Valley and three swimmers from Franklin County picked up individual titles.
For Chambersburg’s boys, Jacob Greenwood took the 500 freestyle in 4:32.95, winning by almost 13 seconds over the runner-up.
Avery Barley captured the 100 backstroke, clocking a time of 49.83, nearly two seconds faster than the second-place swimmer.
For the girls, Shippensburg’s Julia Strine took first place in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.78.
Chambersburg placed sixth in the boys team standings with 180 points; State College won with 342.
Trojan coach Chad White said, “I’m super proud of how the boys performed this weekend. It was great to see how fast they went on just one day of rest.”
The Chambersburg 200 medley relay of Barley, Michael Johnson, C.J. Pong and Greenwood turned in a time of 1:36.26 to place second. The time broke a school record.
Greenwood was second in the 200 free in 1:42.62. Pong was the 100 butterfly runner-up in 51.59, followed by Barley in third (51.69). Pong also placed fourth in the backstroke in 52.51.
White said, “At this point of the season, all of the returning boys are ahead (time-wise) of where they were last year. We have three weeks to prepare for districts, where we hope to build and improve on the success we just had.”
For Shippensburg, Elijah Zinn placed fifth in the 50 free in 22.40, as the Greyhounds were 11th in the standings.
Strine also placed fourth in the 100 free (53.39) and led off the Lady Hounds’ 400 free relay team (with Madelyn Facchinei, Madison Osanitch and Makenna Morris) that was third in 3:40.65, and the 200 free relay team (with Teddi Powell, Osanitch and Morris) that took fourth in 1:41.16.
Osanitch was fourth in the 500 free (5:12.62) and Morris took fifth in the 100 free (54.47).
Ship finished fifth in the team race, which was won by Hershey, and Chambersburg was tied for 13th.
For Waynesboro, Lauren Wetzel placed third in the 100 backstroke (59.66) and fourth in the 200 free (1:57.42).
For the Chambersburg girls, Maddie Kinton took sixth in the 50 free in a personal-best 25.32, while Liv Terrazas was seventh in the backstroke in 1:00.81, which was also a personal best.
Trojan girls coach Donnie Miller said, “We had some impressive swims Friday — 11 girls competed either individually or in relays and eight of them turned in at least one best time.
“This meet is a big competition and full of energy. It’s great for the athletes to experience this atmosphere. Seeing that the time and efforts our athletes put into the sport will produce results is motivating. We were much improved from last year’s point total of 5.”
